The Sacred Site of Delphi in Greece

        Delphi in Greece
At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi. Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world met. The site was marked by the sacred Omphalos, or “navel stone.” The sanctuary of Delphi was for many centuries the cultural and religious centre and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world. The earliest finds in the area of Delphi, which date to the Neolithic period (4000 BC), come from the Korykeion Andron, a cave on Parnassos, where the first rituals took place. The name Delphi itself comes from the same root as delphus, “womb” and indicates archaic veneration of Mother Earth at the site.

Located at the navel of the world and personally blessed by Apollo, Delphi was the holiest site in the world for the ancient Greeks. Today, the natural beauty of the site is breath-taking and the mountain springs that feed this land contain the most refreshing and energizing water. A special energy can be felt by all who visit this sacred site and this energy permeates the wands donated by Delphi trees.

The oracle of Delphi by John Collier

        The Oracle of Delphi

Apollo killed the serpent Python (son of Mother Earth), guardian of Delphi’s sacred Castalian Spring. The sun god then established an oracle at the spring, promising to provide counsel to all who needed it. Through Apollo, the priestess of the oracle was believed to have the power of prophecy. She would enter a meditative state induced by fumes seeping though a crack in the mountain and by eating laurel leaves. Incidentally, laurel is also sacred to the God Apollo. Cities, rulers and ordinary individuals alike consulted the oracle, expressing their gratitude with great gifts and spreading its fame around the world.
